I was hosting a dinner party for my husband and some of his co-workers when his boss’s wife tripped on a step and spilled her cabernet on our new carpet. Yes, of course, our new carpet is white. We’d had it for less than a week. I was petrified but remained calm and kept a smile on my face. I’d always heard that club soda helps get out red wine so the caterer immediately went to work. It did a fairly good job but my question is two-fold: Is there any other miracle remedy for red wine spills; and is there anything I can do with what has set in?

There are a couple of other solutions besides club soda that are good to have on hand. In this case, I’ll bet you also had white wine at your party. White wine neutralizes red wine and makes it easier to lift the color off of your carpet or clothing. Simply pour white wine over the stained area and very gently blot the liquid up with a thick towel. Once you have the majority of the spill blotted up, take your favorite carpet shampoo or clothing stain remover and clean as you would if it were a bit of dirt.

Scotchgard’s Oxy Carpet Cleaner works well to lift stains and provide a stain protector to the area of the carpet it was used to clean. If you have white carpets, and you like to entertain, you should probably invest in a bottle. Or two.

Another step to take immediately is to pour salt on the spill. Salt can keep the wine from setting until you are able to start cleaning it up with club soda, white wine or Oxy.

For stains that have set in, you will probably need to get a professional carpet cleaner out to your home and let them do the job they know best. They can work miracles even going so far as bleaching out a stain (for whites) to dying your carpet to match its original color. Make sure you hire a reputable company. You may want to talk to a high-end hotel in your city to see who they use for such an occasion.
