What is the best way to clean stainless steel appliances? I rub and rub and rub and the spots – especially fingerprints – are very difficult to clean.

Typically Merry Maids team members use a stainless steel cleaner for regular cleaning and maintenance. But you've already mentioned the primary culprit that causes streaking -- oily fingerprints. There are some natural products around the house to help keep those stainless steel appliance sparkling and shining like they looked in the store.
Vinegar -- To clean and polish stainless steel, simply moisten a cloth with undiluted white or cider vinegar and wipe clean. Can also be used to remove heat stains on stainless steel cutlery.
Natural oils -- To remove streaks, we often use a lemon oil product diluted with a gallon of water, but you may use Murphy’s Oil Soap or even olive oil. If you use olive oil, you want to apply a small amount to a soft cloth and rub over the entire surface. This is great to prevent spots and streaks around the water dispenser on the fridge.
Club soda -- Sometimes, streaks or heat stains can be removed from stainless steel by rubbing with club soda.
