I cleaned my tub so much with tilex and anything else I can find. I cant get it white again. It needs to be refinished now. How can I get the brown spots off? This is an old house built in 1945.

Hi Linda,

Using bleach or products that contain bleach may seem like a good idea, but it doesn’t do the job, especially if the brown spots are a result of rust buildup over time. Bleach can actually cause rust stains to set.

Several acids will dissolve iron rust and other metal oxides. Hydrofluoric acid is the most effective but also dangerous to use. Oxalic acid is safer but slower acting. An oxalic rust remover is the best choice for delicate fabrics or anything with red dye or glass fibers. Oxalic acid is also best for removing rust stains from porcelain or enamel plumbing fixtures and appliances. Some scouring powders contain oxalic acid to help them dissolve rust stains.

I would be very careful in your case, though, because removing the rust may actually remove some of the finish if the rust is embedded in the finish.

Thanks
