I am constantly buying new stainless shower caddies because of the rust build up. Is there a way to prevent the rust from appearing?

Hi Richie,

One trick that has been known to help prevent rust buildup as well as eliminate hard water stains on shower walls and opaque doors is boat wax. Rubbing boat or car wax over the caddy about once a month or so will help slow rusting. Also reducing the moisture by keeping a rag next to the shower to wipe down the caddy and making sure that wet rags aren't left there to dry will help prevent rust on the shower caddy.

An important note to think of when buying your next shower caddy is that there are about 150 varieties of stainless steel with about 15 grades that are most commonly used. Less expensive shower caddies will probably only carry a the minimum standard of 11 percent chromium for stainless steel. You may consider skipping the big box store for a specialty bed and bath shop or go online to find a shower caddy that is made of a higher grade 18/10 stainless steel (18% chromium/10% nickel). There are some rust-proof shower caddies that are guaranteed by the manufacturer; it may be worth the investment if you are spending money regularly replacing them.

And as a side note, stainless steel is 100% recyclable, so don't throw the old one away if you can drop it at a metal recycling center.
