How do you get tape residue off carpeting?

Hi Laurie,
We had to ask the carpet care experts at our sister company ServiceMaster Clean for help with your question. The answer wasn't an easy fix. Because tape residue isn't water-soluble, a product that includes a solvent. There is a danger applying this product yourself though, because use too much and you could damage your carpet. We would recommend calling a professional to help.
D-limonene based solvents are available at most carpet cleaner supply stores. A couple of examples of a products that contain d-limonene are Citrus-solv by Bridgepoint or Solv-oil w/citrus by ServiceMaster.
Vacuum area to be cleaned thoroughly first. The application of the solvent is VERY important, it must be sprayed on in a mist, so it does not saturate the carpet backing. Most carpets have two backings, a primary and secondary backing. These backings are glued together by a latex adhesive THAT WILL DELAMINATE IF IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH SOLVENT!= CARPET RUINED.
Lightly agitate affected fibers area with a towel, do not scrub! Next, extract fibers with a hot water extraction unit.
