How do I get mildew off my wallpaper in the bathroom?

Hi Annette,

Thank you for your question. We've done some checking because most tips and tricks to remove mildew may do more damage to the wallpaper. I asked one of our experts at Merry Maids, and she said that bleach is the only thing to eliminate mildew.

With wallpaper, an inconspicuous area would need to be tested to verify if the bleach will damage the wallpaper.  Test the area using a mixture of 1 gallon of water and ½ cup of bleach and see if you can remove it without damaging the paper.

When it comes to mildew, the best solution is to eliminate the environment causing mildew to grow. Mildew is caused from dampness.  The bigger question would be to determine is why is the area not drying out and try to provide better ventilation to prevent the mildew from accumulating.  If it is a bathroom area, perhaps opening a window or drying down a surface, but keeping the surface area dry will prevent mildew from building up.

Hope that helps!

Merry Maids
